The Shelter to Soldier nonprofit is a two in one program. They adopt dogs from local shelters and train them to be service dogs for combat veterans suffering from a number of ailments. The program came about because of two jarring stats. The first being that yearly, about 1.2 million dogs are euthanized due to behavioral issues, illness, or lack of space. The second stat that galiventized the start of this organization was that every 69 minutes a veteran or service member’s life is lost due to suicide. None of these issues are easy to tackle but Shelter to Soldier found a way to bridge the two. Teaching old rescue dogs and giving veterans/service members a willing companion to help them through hard times.
